Roguelike

1 Name: Anonymous 2026-07-30 16:53
Best language to create a roguelike in ASCII like Nethack and Angband?
2 Name: Anonymous 2026-07-31 01:25
Anything that would be terminal friendly really, as long as manipulating a video matrix from scratch and building a bespoke graphics engine wouldn't be extremely tedious. Honestly use whatever you want but it has to fit whatever you are envisioning. If you prefer to be a period accurate autist x86 ASM and C linked for DOS will do, but if you want to have it work in a web browser JS is fine, or for a modern terminal say in Linux using ncurses C/C++/Rust, anything JVM, Python, or even Lisp would work. It is a question of how much plumbing you are comfortable with doing in order to use a language you find more elegant for the more abstract game logic.

I can't believe that denpa chan has existed for this long and nobody's made an OS thread. What operating system(s) do you have currently installed? On what devices? What do you like about it? Are you a distro hopper or have you settled on The One?

Since the introduction of certain legislation I no longer use an "operating system" but instead just happen to make use of a collection of various tarballs that I have configured in a particular way.

Differences between OSes

I have recently got MacBook Neo and it made me think... Why tf Windows is so shit?
Neo is a pretty limited weird piece of hardware if you think about it. CPU is plenty fast yes, but it has just 8GB of RAM, yet somehow Mac OS works fine and it is pretty hard to make it stutter.

So, before you reply me with /g/ replies, let's think about it more less scientifically?

100%. The dorks I work with always leave a bunch of youtube tabs open in their profiles so when I go to use the shared PC, 14.8/16 GB of ram is already in use (causing the whole thing to freeze up most of the time due to pagefile/swap/sleepmode pooping the bed). Also the lock screen is covered in clickbait 'news' and applets... on a corporate PC... I can rant about copilot getting duct tapped to everything too if ya'll want or Edge and MSN network: got a dingus coworker that always gets snared by the wall of clickbait. He opens the browser to show me something for work and the wall of garbage articles gets him every time.

Idk, proper browser... Proper OS? Idk which one. It should keep tabs that aren't really used (i.e. not present on the screen or aren't playing videos) in swap. Like each tab is a subprocess, and it should get lower priority once it is in the background. I think Windows is capable of doing it.
Safari on Mac OS X (or even Firefox, don't remember) actively does it. Or Mac OS does it, I don't honestly know. So as a result you're not wasting any real RAM if amount of tabs is too large.

I did even more testing.
Windows has memory compression. Originally i wanted to use rammap, but.... it says it in taskmanager if you hover over.
Idle: 200Mb compressed size, roughly 600mb uncompressed (so similar as zram, mac os etc)
Under load (GIMP+noise, firefox, edge (ew i touched that)): 0 (yes zero) to 400 mb compressed. So uncompressed size is about 0 to 1200 mb.
It didn't even try compressing, straight to fucking SSD.

Instant photography and its consequences

1 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-16 06:32
Instant photography and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

I must not be the only person on this site with a similar sentiment. The obsession with and accessibility of instant digital photography has fundamentally changed the way in which people interact within the world. People no longer live experiences; they record them. The Western world and parts of Asia I believe have been the most heavily affected by this dreadful phenomenon. Billions of humans that now think it is totally normal to broadcast extremely intimate parts of their lives (mundane things too of course) to the greater population. Not to the mention the privacy ramifications that have arisen as a result. As Richard Stallman said, and I’m paraphrasing slightly here; “Cellphones would have been Stalans dream”. People now willingly upload their crimes onto social media platforms. That is really the level of information desensitisation that we are dealing with here. The worst part is that due to the rising levels of technological integration in our daily lives it Is getting harder and harder to simply opt out (at least for most “normal” people). And, on top of that, even if you DO choose to opt out, you will most likely STILL be integrated into the system via third parties one way or another; (Family/Work photographs, mandatory identification for more and more mundane issues, security cameras, random people filming for social media on the street, non libre software, e.t.c…) . At this point unless you are a proper hiki/recluse (an ideal that is sadly not feasible for most people) you are forced into the system. What was once an optional tool has slowly become, through gradual behavioural decay, an item that most would not even be able to conceive living without. Sort of digital Stockholm syndrome I guess. In terms of mitigation tactics I come up empty handed. I thought we could maybe generate some ideas in this thread regarding what could be done about this. Above all else, if you still possess a smartphone I would highly suggest that you really reflect on how necessary it is to you and consider getting rid of it. If you really need long distance communication, use mail or a “dumbphone”, if you love photography as an artform, use an actual camera and if you enjoy music while out of the house, simply download the songs and put them onto an mp3 player.

This thread is about a general trend, not about each person's individual smartphone usage. Regardless of how mindful you are about smartphone cameras, their proliferation has, indeed, had negative effects on society.
You're no different from those people who say "but I have a gun, and I've never shot anyone!" when people are talking about gun control and mass shootings.

The real problem with photography is all the cameras are taking all the photons. Those photons could help the blind in africa, but no we give them to cameras!

One thing I struggle with in the realm of instant photo and video is grounding myself in reality. So much of visual media is unreal, that I find it difficult these days to really believe what I'm seeing. That's why I prefer a board like this one. It's easier for me to process information when I read it as opposed to looking at it.

These days, I find that it's important to limit myself to exposure of images in general. I had a dumb phone for a year, but got a smartphone so I could more easily text people and do basic administrative stuff. Even these days, I barely spend 30 minutes a day on it, if that.

Computer use is varied, but these days I try to only use my computer to update my website, read, message friends, and listen to music. This honestly takes up most of my day, but I try to keep things as low-key as I can regarding my computer usage.

music technology

1 Name: Anonymous 2025-12-15 09:26
hi everywanwan. i like to use the computer to create music but sometimes i use my casio sampler or one of my synthy-sizers to do the job. i like my snares wet and my pianos dry. i would say philip's spectre was pretty smart when he came up with noise wall (, but merzbow took it a step further when he invented the wall of sound (many speakers arranged into the shape of a wall)

https://vocaroo.com/14zEZiuw8Leh
this is my latest thing im working on. the section after the bass leaves and before the flute/trumpet come in sounds kinda mushy without bass on it, but i didn't like the patterns i had so this demo is necessarily scuffed.

tyvm, you can find more of my work at ofreverence bandcamp. i suppose it might be time for me to release some more instrumentals, idk.

sunvox is cool as hell but ive had so much trouble using a lot of music software ever since i got extra comfortable in fruity loops. did you know it supports patching together VSTs, midi inputs, automation layers in a modular fashion? you can load effects in instrument slots and instruments in effect slots it's so insanely flexible i hate it because pretty much any other host software for music production feels slow now. personal weakness on my part, certainly.

I really do need to get back into regularly making music again. I mostly use Renoise and MilkyTracker. Renoise is so good. I bought it years and years ago (after more years of abusing the unlimited length demo) and it is one of the few pieces of software I am glad to have spent money on.

What makes content quality? Do we need more of it here? How?

1 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-29 23:06
There's probably certain expectations, subjective tastes, even objective measures that can decide what quality content. But what makes content quality? Is the name itself "content" reductive, resulting in a dumbing down effect? How about if we just 'make' things? Is quality something that is just, evident? There's a market even for bad content. So how do we define what makes a creation quality? Good, or bad?
I post this because of the recent Osaka video "The Truth about Denpachan" touches on this subject slightly.
2 Name: meat 2026-03-29 23:52
a large part for me is the the intention behind it's creation if even the person behind it's creation only made it for the sake of getting "views" on the internet why is it worth the time of anyone else if it has no meaning behind it or no passion behind it then why should anyone else go out and find those things for it?
3 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-30 01:12
I’ve noticed there are threads with some good discussion which fizzle out into inane low quality posts made by 12 year old retard kids (see the NEETism and social class thread for what I’m talking about). In fact this is 90% of the site nowadays.

The issue with quality is that it can’t be entirely subjective. You have to have a shared yardstick, even if it’s somewhat hazy and not clearly defined, a social standard for what counts as good and bad quality that isn’t as narrow as the arbitrary standards of discord tyrants or so loose it’s akin to p3do heyuri.
4 Name: waves 2026-03-31 04:00
>>2 agreed on intent. I can tell the difference between an honest take, and a video padded out to meet an ad quota. Talking in circles purposefully vs expressing some opinion with valid points and a human touch
>>3 i saw somewhere people mention the idea of boards that are designated for the purpose of exploring specific ideas, and having a space for the rants and low quality posts you mention. Im not sure how that works as im unfamiliar with the specifics of 4chan for example ( the site as a whole. I dont even know if thats the correct name ? )
Perhaps theres sense in that. I guess one could partition it off but i dont know the concequences of such, and how that would work

As a rounded off point to both the above, maybe theres some sense in having creators have their space, and a way to connect to those spaces. One blog run by one person is less prone to the low quality contributions of many. I guess also, topics of discussion that are more complex may attract low quality posts by just about anyone posting stuff to derail or change the subject. Reddit has the advantage of being able to hide responses behind a plus sign, so that the comment threads are more coherent, as much as reddit also has a problem with lowest common denominator effect such as "bro just google it" type rhetoric

(Post truncated)
5 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-31 04:40
The recently active threads page is the direct cause of many "low quality posts". I don't think it should be removed, because it serves a filtering function. The problem is that it's very difficult to have conversations which bypass that filter. I've mentioned it before, abstractly but i'll be much more clear this time. If you want higher quality engagement a substantial number of people need to start using Sage on all posts in certian threads to keep them from hitting recently active. Bookmark threads you want to follow. and live with the likely slow post frequency.

(i don't expect anyone to actually do any of this. but it is an actionable solution)

1 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-20 02:27
When 4chan got hacked, other imageboards were finally able to develop real userbases, since all the 4chud users were forced out of their comfort-shithole -- I miss that. I miss seeing 8moe's niche boards finally get a little bit of activity. It fucking sucks that the most active anonymous imageboard out there is the one with the least updates and features.

how to reasonably quit reddit

1 Name: Anonymous 2024-06-17 01:12
I hate doom scrolling. Successfully quit all my other doom scrolly sites fairly easily, but reddit is a monster. I was able to deal with the likes of twitter by just adding a block to the domain in hosts. but reddit is basically core internet infrastructure. I never notice until I try blocking it, but most days multiple times a day I will search something where the answer is clearly given on a reddit post, and essentially no where else (or rather it is probably elsewhere but that elsewhere has been buried in the search results by reddit's ease of access and brevity of answer)
once I'm back in reddit, it's too easy to start looking at other things. I hate it. I never feel better looking at reddit, it's just like lost time happening intermittently.

Just use the Singlefile extension or, if you're a little smarter, pywb as a proxy. The newest of the new soyjak party nusoiBABY is probably more tech literate than the average denpa/technology/ user.
If you just want to save text I would look into mercury/Mozilla's readability library
12 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-20 16:47
Block the domain in hosts and whenever a search result leads you to a reddit post, if you really want to see it, copy the link and manually change the url to eddrit or some other barely functional alternative frontend. Don't automate the process. With time you will come to realize that most reddit posts are quite useless as well and you wont find it worth it to open it since it requires extra manual labor and you will become better at finding the right information in those other buried places and piecing the answer together by yourself.
